The Ultrasonic Distance Sensor 0664 allows for continuous measurement of an object’s position without disrupting its movement. The sensor operates based on the reflection of ultrasonic pulses. The Distance Sensor can be connected directly to the digital BT inputs of the CMA interfaces (CoachLab II/II+ and VinciLab 2). For CLAB and WiLab, you can use the BT55i motion detector.

Description

The distance between the sensor and the object is determined by the time it takes an ultrasonic pulse to travel from the sensor to the object and back.
The sensor housing is threaded on both sides for mounting on a tripod. The 10cm tripod rod is included.

The distance sensor can be used for mechanics experiments about motion, such as:

  • People walking back and forth, tracing x-t and v-t graphs
  • Harmonic moving objects (e.g., pendulum, spring with weight)
  • Measuring the height of people or jump height
  • Carts on a table or track (also in combination with a force sensor)
  • Tracking objects on an air track
  • Bouncing or falling objects
  • Studying how the magnetic field depends on position, when using the distance sensor in combination with a magnetic field sensor

As soon as the distance sensor is connected to a working interface, you will hear clicks (each click corresponds to an ultrasonic pulse).
The minimum distance the sensor measures is approximately 0.20 m. The maximum range is 6 to 12 m, depending on the size, shape, orientation, and surface of the detected object. Note that the maximum distance of 12 m is only achieved under ideal conditions, i.e., with a large, flat object (e.g., a wall) perpendicular to the line of sight to the sensor. For smaller or non-flat objects, the maximum distance will be shorter.
